Sobriety of Commentary

belonging the way trust Jan 28, 2021

A new year often inspires a renewed hope, but today I greet you with soberness of soul. All hell has broken loose into our political, spiritual, emotional, and relational lives right before our eyes. With all of me, I would have rather stayed in the warm and safe cavern in the recesses of my mind, refraining from penning this blog. But, this is not how I want to show up this new year.

I am here with you, together in the pain and in the healing. Words seem so insufficient and utterly distasteful to the pen at this moment in time. Maybe this is because it has been words that have incurred our collective volatility and relational hemorrhaging.

I do not purpose to have answers, commentary, or inspiration in this dark hour of our lives. The darkest hour for most of us. To think that those I love and care for believe that their fellow countrymen and women, neighbors, and fellow citizens would possibly be planning their harm, grieves me to no end.

I will give you what I have. I have Jesus…and if I can give him to you I will. My heart to yours…Christ in me and Christ in you. The apostle Paul reminded us that our only hope at any time and anywhere is Christ in us, not out there.

Living within you is the Christ who floods you with the expectation of glory! This mystery of Christ, embedded within us, becomes a heavenly treasure chest of hope filled with the riches of glory for his people, and God wants everyone to know it!

~ Colossians 1:27 | The Passion Translation

Christ Jesus directed his followers on how to do life together with those who belonged to Him, and to each other. This one directive has not become obsolete.

My hope and prayer for you, my friend, is that you will not attempt to find your way through our collective wounding alone. You belong to someone and something bigger than your pain.

Gather with your loved ones, virtually or in-person…hold them, kiss them, and tell them that you love them. Notice them in their pain and confusion. Share your own pain with those you belong to. May you find time this week to be still enough to listen and experientially know that our loving Father hasn't abandoned you. He won't leave you to your own ways of doing life, ways that may no longer work as they once have.

The way God designed our bodies is a model for understanding our lives together as a church: every part dependent on every other part, the parts we mention and the parts we don’t, the parts we see and the parts we don’t. If one part hurts, every other part is involved in the hurt, and in the healing. If one part flourishes, every other part enters into the exuberance. ~ 1 Corinthians 12:25-26 | The Message

Our country, neighborhoods, workplaces, schools, and communities have only one hope, the church. Christ in you and Christ in me. Brothers and sisters arm in arm about the Master's business. All else seems to have failed up to this point. Could this possibly have been the Father's intention all along?
